A 5-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet Monday morning after playing with an unsecured firearm

Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele said police were called at about 6:40 a.m. to 1033 Penncraft Road in Luzerne Township. According to Aubele, the boy found a pistol in his mother’s purse.

“Her child got a hold of it this morning and ended up shooting himself. The child was okay,” Aubele said.

Aubele added the child was hospitalized with “somewhat superficial” injuries. He would not say if his mother would be charged with a crime.

“An investigation is ongoing. I don’t think any decision has been made. I will say she was cooperative,” Aubele said.

He added that “firearm safety is paramount” and encouraged gun owners to keep their firearms locked up and away from children.

“This is a very terrible situation that could have been much, much worse,” Aubele said.
