Flooding damage causes extended closure to Berry Road

Extensive flooding damage to Berry Road has led to a portion of the road being closed for the foreseeable future.
Since June 16, Berry Road has been closed between Manifold Road to Old Mill Boulevard as a result of a collapsed pipe.
“The roadway was undermined. It is completely unstable,” said Jordan Cramer, chief of the South Strabane Fire Department.
Cramer added that the section of Berry Road will be closed for at least two months – potentially longer – as it undergoes repairs.
Flash flooding caused by heavy rainfall on June 14 and 15 led to South Strabane Township supervisors issuing a declaration of disaster and emergency.
“The flooding that occurred was very, very isolated to South Strabane Township,” Cramer said at a supervisors’ meeting Tuesday evening. “If you go a few miles north of us or south from us, they received very little rain, and some areas didn’t receive any rain at all.”
According to Cramer, the fire department responded to about 40 calls over that weekend.
At Tuesday’s meeting, supervisors unanimously voted to formally recognize the disaster declaration, which ended on Monday.
Cramer said at the meeting the declaration will help the township receive assistance from the state and federal governments.
“Without that disaster declaration, the potential that we would be eligible is unlikely,” Cramer said.
