Canonsburg tables talk of parking authority

By Paul Paterra 2 min read

The creation of a parking authority in Canonsburg has been tabled.

Additional parking space in the borough has been identified, nullifying the need to borrow money and build a new lot.

The borough once had a parking authority, which is helpful in securing funding for parking-related projects. Canonsburg is in the midst of redevelopment and revitalization, leading to discussion about reestablishing the authority.

Rich Russo, council president, said, “It looks like we will be able to move past having a parking authority. We’ve been able to find, throughout town, 20-plus additional parking spots by reconfiguring some things and finding spots on streets that have gone unused. So there’s no need for us to borrow $1 million and build a new parking lot at this point.”

Russo credited Councilman John Severine for his work in identifying the additional available parking.

“Sometimes, you just have to take a closer look,” Russo said. “He was able to identify these 20 to 22 spots that were just sitting there underutilized.”

Council also is expected to approve paving three borough roads – John, Joseph and Lucia drives – when it meets March 10.

Another vote expected to be on that agenda is to approve matching funds for a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant. The cost to the borough would be $125,000 for a $250,000 project to install new restrooms at Canonsburg Town Park.
