Greene commissioners OKs grant for Progress Ave. redevelopment

A planned business development in Greene County has moved a step closer to completion.
At their Thursday meeting, the county commissioners approved a grant agreement with the Commonwealth Finance Authority for $350,000 for the Progress Avenue Redevelopment Project.
Grant money will go toward redeveloping the avenue’s intersection with Route 21, and adding infrastructure for future business and development, said Board Chairman Jared Edgreen.
In a press release announcing the grant, state Sen. Camera Bartolotta said the improvements would help minimize any congestion resulting from two new businesses coming to the site — a Starbucks and the county’s first Chipotle.
“These developments are expected to encourage people to spend their money in Greene County,” said Bartolotta, R-Carroll Township. “The restaurants will create between 50 and 70 jobs combined, which will support our local economy. Now, a small downside to the development – increased traffic – will be mitigated by the traffic improvements funded with this grant.”
The county had originally applied for a $900,000 grant, Edgreen said. The board will meet with developer PennTex in a couple of weeks to determine if that grant is enough to proceed with the project, Edgreen said.
“We’re excited, though,” he said. “We need it, and that 21 corridor is being developed more and more as well, as well it should be.”
Clerk Jeff Marshall said if all goes as expected, construction at the site would likely take place in about a year.
