Police involved in standoff with suspect following Monessen shooting
Monessen police were involved in a standoff with a shooting suspect Friday morning.
According to an emailed statement from a spokesperson for the Westmoreland County district attorney’s office, the incident began about 4:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Leeds Avenue.
The district attorney’s office spokesperson said the suspect was taken into custody without incident at approximately 9 a.m.
The standoff began as police attempted to serve a search warrant on a person suspected of being involved in a shooting that occurred the previous night in the city.
One person was shot just before 11 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Leeds and Marion avenues. The victim was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital and is expected to survive, according to the district attorney’s office.
Monessen City School District Superintendent Robert Motte posted to his Facebook page that the district would operate on a two-hour delay due to the incident.
“The safety of our faculty, staff and students is our top priority,” his post reads.
The district Facebook page later posted that schools would operate on a flexible instruction day Friday.
Further updates on the incident were not available before Friday’s deadline.
