Pat Phillips won the Republican nomination for Washington County controller Tuesday night, although it was not yet clear if he would face an opponent in the November general election.

Phillips, of Canonsburg, held a small lead in the Republican primary over acting controller Heather Sheatler, leading 3,839 votes to her 3,335 votes with 172 of 180 precincts reporting late Tuesday night.

As of press time, Tony Jacob DeLost and Brenda Davis were tied with 2,760 votes each.

Even with Phillips securing the Republican nomination for controller, he could still face Sheatler or another candidate in the Nov. 4 general election. There were more than 1,600 write-in votes in the Democratic primary, meaning another candidate could win that party’s nomination by garnering at least 250 votes. The results of the write-in race for Democrats would not be known until later this week.
