Three killed in Henry Clay Township crash
State police are continuing to investigate a multi-vehicle crash in Henry Clay Township that killed three people and injured five others.
The crash occurred on Route 40 near Dark Hollow Road around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Police said a tractor-trailer had been traveling eastbound on Route 40 when it entered the westbound lanes and struck a Ford pickup truck head-on. After that, the pickup truck had a second head-on collision with a Chevrolet express van.
The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the Ford pickup truck, as well as the front seat passenger of the van, were pronounced dead at the scene. Five other occupants of the van, including its driver, were taken to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.
Fayette County Coroner Dr. Bob Baker said his office was called to assist with identifying the victims because of the severity of the crash. As of presstime, neither the names of those who died nor those who were injured had been released.
The site of Monday’s crash is about 10 miles away from a 2024 crash on Route 40 near its intersection with Meadow Run Road in which five people were killed.
State crash data showed between 2020 and the end of 2024, there had been 12 fatalities, five serious injuries and 58 minor injuries on the 10.3-mile stretch of Route 40 between Route 381 and the border with Somerset County.
Trooper B Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialists (CARS) and the Forensic Services Unit (FSU) are assisting in the investigation.
