The chairman of the Greene County Republican Committee is facing misdemeanor charges after he was accused of threatening a district legislative aide at a GOP meeting in Waynesburg nearly two years ago.

During a county Republican Party event at the Waynesburg VFW on Nov. 14, 2023, Chairman Clint Blaney allegedly told the woman that he would “poke your eyes out and slit your throat” during a heated exchange with the unidentified aide, court documents read.

Investigators with the state Attorney General’s office, which filed the charges Oct. 30, wrote in court documents that photographs were shown at the meeting of a previous event in which no photos appeared of the aide’s Republican boss – identified by a source as state Rep. Bud Cook – but his opponent in that upcoming GOP primary election, Stephanie Waggett, was pictured during the slideshow. The aide, identified in court documents only as D.H., “expressed her displeasure to the audience” that Cook was not included in the slideshow, according to court documents.

That prompted Blaney to get up from his seat and approach the aide while “yelling about the comment she made” in front of the guests, investigators wrote in court documents. He then told her she had no right to be at the meeting or make any comments.

When the meeting concluded, Blaney approached the woman again and allegedly became “aggressive” as his demeanor changed, the aide told investigators. Blaney then told the aide he would “take down her boss” before allegedly threatening her, according to court documents.

“If I find out it was you who told (name redacted), I will poke your eyes out and slit your throat,” Blaney allegedly said, according to the affidavit.

It’s not clear what Blaney was referencing or what he suspected the aide of doing. Investigators said the comment and Blaney’s “aggressive behavior scared” the aide, prompting her to begin crying and leading to another member in the audience to intervene and direct Blaney away from the woman. Others in attendance apparently saw the woman distraught before she left the event in tears, according to court documents.

A private criminal complaint was filed with Greene County District Attorney Brianna Vanata, who forwarded the information to the Attorney General’s office for further investigation. Special Agent Michael Hasson investigated the incident and filed charges Oct. 30 just before the two-year statute of limitations expired.

Blaney, 73, of Morgan Township, faces misdemeanor charges of terroristic threats and harassment. The charges were originally filed at District Judge David Balint’s office, but were later refiled with District Judge Thomas Ankrom.

Reached by telephone Tuesday morning, Blaney said he could not comment on the case or discuss his future as the Greene County Republican Committee chairman. He referred questions to his Butler-based attorney, Tom King, who said Blaney denies the allegations against him.

“This incident that allegedly occurred two years ago is vigorously denied by Mr. Blaney and we intend to defend these allegations and expect to vindicate his good name and character,” King said.

An email sent to the Greene County Republican Committee’s general inbox did not receive a response Tuesday.

Blaney, who has been the county’s GOP chairman since 2023, is scheduled to appear for his preliminary hearing before Ankrom at 11 a.m. Dec. 17.
