Crews from Neiswonger Construction work Thursday while making progress demolishing a section of the old Washington Mall on the northern side of the property that faces Interstate 70/79 in South Strabane Township.

The crews began working several weeks ago and have cleared out a significant portion of the dilapidated structure by demolishing one section of the mall, exposing the interior area while piling up debris to be hauled away.

The $5.9 million demolition is being paid using money earmarked from Washington County’s blight fund in order to clear the property to build a Costco wholesale retail club, Campers Inn RV center and other stores being developed by 79/70 Associates LLC, which is connected to Leetsdale-based Chapman Properties.
