The chief of police at McDonald Borough fired a single shot at a man who pointed a firearm at him over the weekend, court documents allege.

State police are handling the investigation after Timothy Motte shot Jeremy Ray Washington in the arm, court documents state.

Washington, 37, of Washington, was charged Saturday by state police with aggravated assault and prohibited possession of a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint, shortly after 9 p.m. Motte responded to the area between Station Street and South Third Street following a report of a potentially armed man threatening an individual.

Charging documents state that Motte learned the man, later identified as Washington, was in front of Michael’s Tavern at 341 E. Lincoln Ave.

Washington allegedly ran as Motte approached him, according to the complaint. A witness saw Washington point a firearm at Motte, at which point Motte fired one round that hit Washington in the arm.

Washington was transported to Allegheny General Hospital where he was in stable condition Monday.

Court records indicate that the aggravated assault charge stems from Washington pointing his gun at Motte.

Motte’s current status with the McDonald Borough Police Department was not immediately clear. McDonald Mayor David Cooper did not respond to a phone call by Monday’s deadline, nor did McDonald council President Tom Rockwell.

Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh also did not respond by deadline.

Washington has yet to be arraigned on the charges.
