A driver was taken to Pittsburgh by helicopter after driving through a barrier and flipping the vehicle Tuesday night.

Charleroi Fire Department Chief Robert Whiten Jr. said crews were called at about 8:50 p.m. to the 900 block of McKean Avenue.

Whiten said the road had been closed off due to a hole in the road. Whiten did not identify the driver, but said the driver was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

According to Whiten, the crash led to a debris field that was about 100 yards long, and the vehicle brought down a utility pole with a transformer. He estimated there were about 30 to 40 gallons of oil in the road. A hazardous materials team and West Penn Power were also called to the scene.

Other than a fire, Whiten said “any kind of call you could think of was in that one accident.”

The current condition of the driver was not immediately available. Charleroi police are investigating.
