A state police trooper suffered injuries Monday night while trying to arrest a man accused of stealing items from a South Union Township video game store.

Police were called to the GameStop store at 221 Walmart Drive shortly before 8 p.m. for a man who had reportedly taken several things without paying for them, according to court documents.

Trooper Troshawn Mickens encountered Joshua Henry F. Williams, who matched the description of the man at the game store, walking along Walmart Drive and attempted to speak with him, police said. However, Williams then ran from the scene and was chased by the trooper during a brief foot pursuit.

Mickens tackled Williams and attempted to arrest him, but the suspect elbowed the trooper, according to court documents. During the scuffle on the ground, Williams “resisted and fought with” Mickens, causing the trooper to suffer several injuries, police wrote in court documents. The trooper eventually used a Taser to subdue Williams, and he was taken into custody.

Mickens went to WVU Uniontown hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered to both knees and his right wrist during the incident, according to court documents.

Williams, 20, of McClellandtown, was charged with felony aggravated assault, along with misdemeanor counts of simple assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

He was arraigned Tuesday morning by District Judge Ronald Haggerty Jr. and taken to the Fayette County jail on $50,000 cash bond. His preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 23 at 9 a.m.
