Public access to Beau Street between Franklin and Main streets in downtown Washington will be restricted for up to a month starting Monday out of an abundance of caution for ongoing demolition work at Courthouse Square.

According to Washington Mayor JoJo Burgess, city officials took action to implement the closure for “extra security and safety precautions” for motorists and pedestrians.

The street will be closed for three weeks to a month depending on the progress of the demolition work, Burgess said.

Drivers will still be able to access Crossroads Center parking and apartments located along Beau Street for the duration of the closure.

Washington City Council approved nearly $3 million in contracts for demolition services and related wall-shoring work in 2025 ahead of the project to tear down the seven-story county office building.

Work began in early March, but was temporarily halted soon after when an excavator fell into a trench and had to be removed before the razing could resume.
