Speakers announced for W&J commencement ceremony
A member of the family that owns the Pittsburgh Steelers will be among the speakers at Washington & Jefferson College’s spring commencement ceremony.
Thomas J. Rooney, a grandson of Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., will be the commencement speaker at the ceremony, which will be held Saturday, May 9, at W&J’s James David Ross Family Recreation Center. A 1993 graduate of W&J, Rooney was a Florida congressman from 2009 to 2019, and is now president and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.
An English major at W&J, Rooney received letters in golf and football.
Another W&J alumnus, Robert M. Howard, will be the baccalaureate speaker. A 1987 graduate, Howard is a W&J trustee and the chief investment officer at Gold Key/PHR, a real estate company. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
An honorary degree will be given to Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, which oversees Pittsburgh International Airport and the Allegheny County Airport.
