A Claysville man is accused of driving under the influence while riding his motorcycle with his young daughter seated in front of him when he crashed on a busy road in Canton Township earlier this month.

Greene-Washington Regional police said 26-year-old Dallas Dawayne Coburn was speeding on Route 844 in Wolfdale shortly before 4 p.m. April 13 when he “laid down” his motorcycle to avoid hitting two SUVs that had stopped ahead of him.

Coburn and the 6-year-old girl, who was sitting in front of him and apparently wearing a helmet, ended up on the ground and were injured, police said. Coburn used profanity and then threatened one of the other drivers, telling her he would “shoot you in the face” as others tended to the little girl while she was crying on the ground, according to court documents.

Police said Coburn picked up his motorcycle and placed the girl back in front of him on the gas tank before an unidentified driver offered to take her in his SUV. Moments after they left, Canton Township firefighters responded and Greene-Washington Regional police were called to the scene.

Police said a nearby property owner had surveillance video showing the crash and the aftermath of the incident. Officers reviewed it and were able to see the motorcycle’s license plate, which was registered to Coburn, although he did not have a motorcycle license or insurance, according to court documents.

While police investigated, Washington County 911 dispatchers alerted officers that a child involved in a “dirt bike accident” had just been admitted to UPMC Washington Hospital. Officers went to the hospital and found Coburn in the emergency department with his daughter, who was being treated by the medical staff.

While there, police said they could smell alcohol on Coburn’s breath, prompting them to ask him to perform field sobriety tests, which indicated he was impaired and led officers to ask him to submit to a blood draw to test the alcohol levels in his body, according to court documents. Coburn refused, police said, and he then somehow left the hospital with the girl without being medically cleared or discharged. Officers found him trying to leave the area in an SUV driven by a woman who told them he “cuts my grass,” and that she just happened to be driving by when he asked her for a ride home, court documents state.

They were taken back to the hospital’s emergency room and the girl’s mother arrived to pick her up. When the woman asked what happened, Coburn apparently told her the girl was riding on the back of the motorcycle. But their daughter quickly interjected and pulled her mother’s hand to get her attention.

“No, Mommy, I was on the front of the bike,” the girl said, according to charging documents.

Coburn was taken from the hospital by a relative while the girl was driven home by her mother.

Greene-Washington Regional police filed an arrest warrant charging Coburn with felony child endangerment and misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, obstructing justice, evidence tampering, disorderly conduct and accident involving damage, along with numerous traffic citations. Charges were filed Monday at District Judge John Bruner’s office, although Coburn had not been arrested as of Tuesday afternoon.
