Bass Pro Shops in South Fayette’s Newbury Market still planned
In March 2024, Bass Pro Shops announced plans to build a new Outdoor World retail outlet in the Newbury Market in South Fayette Township, with an eye toward opening it in early 2026.
With the year now almost one-third finished, it looks like the hunters, fishermen, campers and other sporting goods enthusiasts who had hoped to be descending on Bass Pro Shops by now are going to have to remain patient. Construction on the planned 100,000 square-foot, two-level store has yet to get underway, and township officials do not have a specific timeline on when it might open.
However, the company appears to be “continuing to move forward with building in South Fayette,” according to Andrea Iglar, the township’s director of communications and community development.
Bass Pro Shops, which is based in Springfield, Mo., did not respond to a request for comment. According to Iglar, the company switched developers on the $20 million project, which would be the first Bass Pro Shops outlet in the Pittsburgh region. The closest stores are in Triadelphia, W.Va., about eight miles from the western edge of Washington County, and in Morgantown, W.Va.
The company has not yet received a building permit from the township, but South Fayette has approved its application for one. Bass Pro Shops has also secured state environmental permits, and the subdivision plan for the store has been recorded with Allegheny County. Iglar explained that “there has been some activity and communication related to the project.”
The Newbury Market is located off Interstate 79 near Bridgeville. The development is currently home to a BJ’s Wholesale Club, a membership-only warehouse retailer, and a Tesla dealership. In September, the Wembley Club, a two-level fitness and racquet sports club, is scheduled to open next to BJ’s.
More than 20 years ago, plans were announced for a Bass Pro Shops store off Racetrack Road in South Strabane that never came to fruition. It would have been about 200,000 square feet and would have had attractions like a hotel, nature park and restaurants. In 2017, Bass Pro Shops merged with Cabela’s, another outdoor retailer.
