Handgun found in Wash High restroom

1 min read

Washington School District Superintendent Alisa King said disciplinary action has been taken in connection to an incident in which a handgun was found inside a boys’ restroom at Washington High School.

King did not disclose details of the incident, including when it occurred and who discovered the firearm, which reportedly belonged to a school resource officer.

The school district issued a statement: “We take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously. We are reviewing our procedures and reinforcing expectations with all staff. Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken in accordance with district policies. We remain committed to maintaining a safe learning environment.”

King said an intensive investigation into the unattended gun was conducted, and the issue was addressed at a recent school board meeting.

The district has two full-time school police officers – one at the middle school/high school and one at Washington Park Elementary – as well as some part-time school police officers.

King said she is grateful that no one was injured, and that the district has implemented changes to make sure that it does not happen again.
