Teen Center hosting two events for area youth
The Common Ground Teen Center, located at 92 N. Main Street in Washington, announces two events open to all teens ages 13 to 18.
The center regularly hosts a Grief/Loss Discussion Group, facilitated by Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski, Teen Outreach Director. At Friday’s meeting, the teens raised questions and concerns about the recent tragic death of 18-year-old Karoline Heintz.
After a spirited conversation about healthy and unhealthy relationships, Podgurski connected with Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania to seek their expertise. On Thursday, Alexandra Brooks, COO of Community Impact at DVSSP, will be at the Common Ground Teen Center at 6 p.m. to address this tragedy and offer support and information.
On Sept. 10, the Teen Center will host its annual kickoff. From 6 to 8 p.m., all teens in attendance will participate in a community photo scavenger hunt, accompanied by Washington & Jefferson College Education Department students and Teen Center staff. The Cooking Club will make treats; pizza will be served; and the Skoolie Ice Cream Bus will also serve treats. Games and contests will round out the evening. Teens are encouraged to bring new attendees and will compete for prizes.
Opened in 2008, the Common Ground Teen Center is a safe, teen-driven space that empowers all teens to grow and learn. Teens are hired as staff, and a Teen Executive Board determines clubs, activities, and speakers.
