Greene board seeking $1.8M grant for Nemacolin sewer project
The Greene County Board of Commissioners approved applying for more than $1.8 million in grant funding Thursday to fix aging infrastructure in the Nemacolin sewer system and treatment plant.
The board submitted the request for 2025 Community Development Block Grant funding on behalf of Cumberland Township.
At a meeting last year on the grant request, township and sewer system officials said the century-old terracotta lines are showing signs of wear and tear, and are being invaded by root systems.
At Thursday’s meeting, the board also approved a right-of-way plan for replacing Greene County Bridge 103, located on Walker Road in Morris Township. It also approved a declaration of taking on a parcel connected to the project.
The county has worked for several years on replacing the 22-foot, single-span bridge, which was built in 1914. In 2022, it received a grant of more than $760,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for the project. At the time, the bridge had a sufficiency rating of 49.1 on a 0-100 scale.
Clerk Jeff Marshall said it would be at least a couple of years before construction could begin on the replacement.
