Multiple crashes were reported across Washington County as snow moved into the area Friday and coated the roadways.

At least seven crashes were reported on Interstates 70 and 79 in South Strabane Township in about an hour’s span around noon, with the bulk of the accidents happening in and around the north and south junctions of the interstate.

The eastbound lanes of I-70/79 at the Murtland Avenue interchange and the westbound lanes of I-70 at the Eighty Four exit were closed to allow crews to remove the wreckage and so the state Department of Transportation could treat the highways.

“Conditions changed pretty quickly, and they’re pretty bad,” South Strabane fire Chief Jordan Cramer said, noting the stretch between the north and south junctions were particularly troublesome. “That little stretch, as usual, was hit hard and the roads are just treacherous.”

Two people were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment, but no serious injuries were reported.
