The state of emergency in the city of Washington has been extended.

City Council voted unanimously Thursday to extend the proclamation declared by Mayor JoJo Burgess on Jan. 26 to Feb. 15.

Burgess signed the declaration – a step also taken by several other communities in the region – to give the city quicker access to funds due to the amount of overtime pay necessary for the public works crews and other departments during the Jan. 25 storm that dumped about a foot of snow on Western Pennsylvania. It was the most to fall in a single day in the area since 11.4 inches of snow fell Feb. 5, 2010.

Declaring a state of emergency enables the city to recoup some of the funds used during the storm.

In related moves Thursday, council voted unanimously to retain contractors Adam Desimone, Sam Morgan and Woodhouse Contracting to perform snow removal services on designated streets.
