Charleroi district judge resumes operations at new location

By Paul Paterra 2 min read

Operations for Charleroi Magisterial District Judge Eric Porter resumed Monday at a new location after being suspended last week when his building was condemned.

Porter will operate out of 250 Chamber Plaza in Charleroi until further notice. Hours of operation will remain 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A water line break collapsed ceilings and flooded the building at 416 Fallowfield Ave., rendering the structure uninhabitable. Operations for Porter were suspended throughout the remainder of the week as a new location for his office was sought.

The Chamber Plaza location also houses satellite locations for Washington County Drug and Alcohol Commission Inc. and Children and Youth Services.

“They said there was ample parking and the fact that there are two satellite county offices already in there made it attractive because of the IT aspect of it,” said Joe Manning, borough manager.

Manning had initially suggested using the borough building, but insurance issues, plus the amount of work that would have been necessary to make the space adaptable for the magistrate prevented the move.

“They would have had to do some rewiring here and put in phone lines,” Manning said. “Because of the county offices already existing there, they have a lot of that infrastructure in place.”

Porter handles cases in Allenport, Bentleyville, Charleroi, Dunlevy, Elco, Fallowfield Township, Long Branch, North Charleroi, Roscoe, Speers, Stockdale and Twilight.
