Greene officials seek engineers for Wisecarver trail
A request for qualifications is going out for potential engineers for a new trail at the Wisecarver Recreation Area.
The Greene County commissioners approved the request in connection with a planned Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant loop trail, part of a series of improvements being made at the park.
The county has received several grants for the project, including a $208,100 Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant in fall 2024.
The request will be out for 30 to 60 days, Clerk Jeff Marshall said.
Last Thursday, the commissioners had updated the DCNR on its plans for the trail, said Board Chairman Jared Edgreen. It would be built in a phased approach.
“Eventually, it will go all the way around (the reservoir), but that will be some years down the road,” he said. “But at least take that asset and put a portion of the trail in that’s ADA (compliant) so you can enjoy the high-quality watershed.”
If all goes well with permitting and design, construction could begin as soon as next year, Marshall said.
Work at Wisecarver this summer will include a boat launch, parking lot, waterless restrooms and playground, Edgreen said.
The board also approved authorization to proceed with a request for information for an update to its Countywide Comprehensive Recreation, Park and Open Space Plan.
The plan had most recently been updated in 2008, while best practices call for an update every 10 years, Marshall said.
“This will be a public process of finding out what the community wants to see as far as a recreation plan,” he said.
Having a new plan in place will also help the county procure grant money for recreation priorities, said Vice Chair Betsy McClure.
