Arc Human Services marks Development Disabilities Month

2 min read

Arc Human Services and The Arc of Washington County are celebrating March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with a series of special events and programming designed to promote inclusion, independence and community awareness.

The celebration will include the art exhibition, “Created Without Limits,” at the Arc of Washington County, 111 W. Pike St., Canonsburg, in its Connecting through Inspiration Art Gallery. The exhibit will feature work created by participants in the organization’s All Abilities Art Classes, which are taught by local artist Becky Mayhew.

The show will kick off with a special open house on Friday, March 6, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and will remain open to the public throughout March during regular gallery hours, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

“Disabilities don’t limit people, but barriers do,” said Darrilyn McCrerey, Director of Advocacy at The Arc of Washington County. “While challenges and obstacles may exist, inclusion and opportunities can play a part in removing those barriers.

“This month gives us the opportunity to continue breaking down stigmas surrounding people with disabilities,” she said. “By breaking down stigma, we create a community where everyone has the opportunity to live fully, contribute meaningfully, and achieve great things, because the possibilities are endless.”

The Arc of Washington County is a nonprofit that provides services and support for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is observed every March to promote inclusion, accessibility and recognition of the contributions of people with developmental disabilities.

Community members are invited to visit Arc Human Services’ Assistive Technology Library and Smart Living Home to see firsthand how technology is helping people with disabilities achieve greater independence at home and in their communities. These technologies include voice-activated devices and adaptive kitchen tools which help transform daily life of those with disabilities.

Also, the Arc of Washington County offers free art and exercise classes open to people of all abilities, providing opportunities for creativity, wellness, and community connection in an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome.
