Charleroi father arrested after police discover poor conditions in home

2 min read

Charleroi police arrested a father over the weekend after finding his children living in unsafe conditions.

Jackson Alexis, 40, of Charleroi, faces two felony charges of endangering the welfare of children.

According to the criminal complaint, shortly before 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Alexis’ daughter called 911 and reported that he was “dead.” Officers found Alexis face down on a mattress on the floor at his home in the 500 block of Rear McKean Avenue. Alexis told police he was trying to get something for his infant son and fell over.

Charging documents state that while police were at the home, Alexis’ daughter used a bucket to go the bathroom. Investigators then discovered the home had no running water, a broken toilet and a shower filled with brown water. There was also allegedly garbage piled up in a corner.

While Alexis was taken to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital for treatment, the two children were taken into protective custody.

According to the complaint, the children were eventually released to their mother after Children and Youth Services declined to take them into custody. The mother, who has not been charged, confirmed to police the home had no running water.

Alexis was arraigned Sunday morning before District Judge Joshua Kanalis, who sent him to the Washington County jail without bond. Online court records indicate that bond was denied due to Alexis not being a U.S. citizen and unemployed.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. March 5.
