The Canon Theatre has the potential to drive approximately $250 million in total economic impact over the coming two decades once the multi-use performing arts venue opens later this year, according to a recent report commissioned by its operator, the Canonsburg Educational and Cultural Institute (CECI).

According to CECI Vice President Paul Scarmazzi, the revived theater is on track for a fall 2026 grand opening.

“I’m really excited. I think it can be a transformational project for the community, one that our county can be proud of,” Scarmazzi said.

The institute acquired the former Canonsburg Middle School building for $500,000 in early 2025 with the goal of reimagining the space as a versatile, community-focused performing arts space.

The previous auditorium is being converted into a 564-seat theater that will host plays, concerts, comedians and a range of other events, Scarmazzi said.

CECI has partnered with Little Lake Theatre Company to be the theater-in-residence once the venue is open to the public, which will represent an expansion of the ongoing relationship between the two groups, he said.

According to Scarmazzi, CECI is aiming for a 50 to 60% use rate for the completed theater, which equates to around 200 nights of programming per year.

These will primarily fill weekend evening slots, with some programming during the week.

The institute hopes that the Canon Theatre will serve as a premiere regional arts destination that will draw in thousands of new visitors to the borough annually, Scarmazzi said.

This equates to $13.8 million in economic impact during its first year of operation, with $250 million in total projected over the following two decades, according to a report completed by Custom Consulting LLC.

More than 20 new jobs will be created, according to the report.

“The Canon Theatre represents more than a physical space. It is a catalyst for creativity, connection and economic vitality,” CECI board president and Canonsburg business owner Tony Colaizzo said in a statement. “This project embodies CECI’s commitment to preserving Canonsburg’s heritage while creating new opportunities for future generations.”

Washington County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Promotion Agency President Jeff Kotula said that his organization has supported the theater project because of its “tremendous potential for our community and region.”

“The theater will serve as a catalyst for continued business development in downtown Canonsburg while generating long-term benefits for Washington County’s tourism industry. Beyond its economic impact, it will become an important community asset that strengthens our arts and cultural offerings and enhances the quality of life throughout the region,” Kotula said in a statement.

Scarmazzi said interior renovation are ongoing and will be completed soon, with exterior work on the East College Avenue property set to begin this summer.

A grand opening event will follow sometime in the fall, he said.

The institute is currently seeking community members, partners and supporters to help bring

this vision to life through donations, sponsorships and volunteer involvement in the theater, with naming and gifting opportunities open for interested patrons.
