Registration open for ‘Fly Like a Girl’ drone program

1 min read

Registration is open until Thursday for the “Fly Like a Girl,” or FLAG Academy, at South Fayette High School and Pittsburgh International Airport starting July 20.

FLAG is a drone academy designed for high school girls to become certified drone pilots. It is open to eligible high school girls throughout the region.

Students who participate will have access to professional-grade drones and find out about the fundamentals of drone operations, aviation safety, airspace regulations and more. The curriculum includes 25 hours of coursework and five to 10 hours of independent work. It is designed to prepare them for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification exam. The Remote Pilot Certificate is required to operate drones commercially in the United States.

The program is also designed to inspire young women to explore careers in aviation, engineering and other STEM-related fields where women have traditionally been underrepresented.

The FLAG Academy will be at South Fayette High School July 20-21 and 23-24, and at Pittsburgh International Airport July 22. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Applications can be found at https://bit.ly/FLAG26Summer. For more information, call 412-278-7591.
