Canonsburg tables roof replacement bid award
Canonsburg Borough Council tabled a scheduled Monday vote to award nearly $150,000 to replace the borough building’s roof, citing a need for further documentation from the prospective contractor.
Borough Manager Jennifer Foster said the motion to table the vote was an act of “due diligence,” in order to ensure that Beaver General Construction LLC provided all necessary safety documentation.
The current roof was installed in phases, with the most recent partial replacement occurring around 2005, she said.
Beaver’s $148,600.20 bid to fully replace the roof with a new shingle system was approximately $150,000 lower than the next lowest estimate from Ramp Construction Company Inc., according to Foster.
She anticipates the bid award will come up for a vote during the council’s next meeting on Aug. 10., with work on the roof starting sometime in September.
Beaver estimated it will take approximately two to three weeks to complete, depending on weather, she said.
Council also approved a motion granting Foster and Mayor David Rhome the ability to temporarily close borough-owned parking lots “when, in their judgment, such closure is necessary for public safety or property protection (including severe weather, structural hazards, hazardous material incidents, law enforcement operations, or public events).”
Foster said the move is intended to give borough officials the ability to act in a timely manner to protect the safety of patrons at events like the well-attended Thursday Night Markets that use public parking space.
