A Hickory man died Sunday night following a rollover crash in which his vehicle ended up on its roof in a strip mall parking lot in Peters Township.

Alexander Lauterbach, 37, was traveling north on Route 19 about 8:30 p.m. when he lost control of his car and crashed into a utility pole before coming to rest in the Waterdam Centre Shopping Plaza parking lot at 4133 Washington Road, according to Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco.

Lauterbach was taken by ambulance to Canonsburg Hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead less than an hour later, Warco said.

Warco said Lauterbach was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but the shoulder belt was not being properly used.

A passenger in the vehicle was also transported to Canonsburg Hospital, but that person’s name and condition were not immediately released.

Peters Township police are investigating the crash and were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Peters Township and North Strabane, along with medics from Canonsburg Ambulance.

Warco said the cause and manner of Lauterbach’s death is pending an autopsy.
