A passenger in a transport van was seriously injured Friday morning when metal debris fell from a pickup truck’s flatbed trailer while the vehicles were traveling on Interstate 70 in Washington County, impaling the windshield and striking her in the head.

State police said the van was traveling west on the interstate near the Jessop Place exit in Canton Township when a black pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer passed in front of the van about 11:20 a.m.

Moments later, a “large, sharp piece of metal flew off from the trailer” and came through the van’s windshield, police said in a press release. The debris then struck the second-row middle passenger in the head.

Medics treated the female at the scene, and she was then flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital, where she is being treated for her injuries and listed in serious condition, police said. Her identity and information on other people in the van were not immediately released.

The black pickup truck did not stop and continued heading west on the interstate, police said. Witnesses reported to police that flags may have been attached to the flatbed trailer that the pickup truck was towing.

Troopers are now searching for the pickup truck and asking the public to help find the driver. Anyone with details about the incident or information on the location of the pickup truck is asked to call state police at their Washington County barracks at 724-223-5200.
