Route 19 in Upper St. Clair to close this weekend for bridge demo
Motorists urged to avoid area this weekend
A busy section of Route 19 in Upper St. Clair will be closed this weekend as crews demolish the cement bridge over the roadway.
Route 19 will be closed between Boyce Road and the McLaughlin Run Road/McMurray Road interchange from 6 a.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday for the demolition of the Country Club Drive Bridge, the state Department of Transportation announced this week.
The bridge, which is about a mile-and-a-half north of the Washington County line, has fallen into disrepair in recent years with chunks of cement underneath the structure getting dislodged, prompting the erection of a safety barrier above the roadway last year to catch falling debris.
Differing detours will be posted for private and commercial vehicles to navigate around the closure. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and find alternate routes around the construction zone.
PennDOT officials said the closure could be lifted earlier if the demolition work is completed sooner than expected, although the schedule is also dependent on weather.
Crews from Allison Park Contractors are conducting the work on the $2.5 million project, which will include demolition and reconstruction of the existing concrete arch span, PennDOT officials said. During construction, there could also be additional day-long closures on Route 19 over some weekends for demolition and construction of temporary bracing.
Route 19 will be restricted to a single-lane of traffic in each direction underneath the structure during construction, which is expected to be completed by October.
Country Club Drive is currently closed and will remain that way for the majority of the reconstruction project.
