Senior centers in Washington, Greene, Fayette receive grants from state
Senior centers in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties will be receiving grants from the state to make renovations and upgrades to their facilities.
All told, more than $3 million is going out to 422 senior community centers across the commonwealth. That includes $2 million in competitive grants and an additional $1 million in non-competitive grants.
Four senior centers across the three counties received competitive grants, which are allotted for updating and modernizing facilities and technology, providing new programs and enhancing nutrition services.
The Uniontown Adult Recreation Center in Fayette County received a $40,505 competitive grant, and the Mt. Morris Satellite Center in Greene County will be getting a competitive grant of $18,661. The McGuffey Senior Center in Washington County will be getting $11,316 while the Burgettstown Senior Center is receiving $50,267. Twenty-nine other senior centers in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties are receiving non-competitive grants of $2,577 apiece.
The grants were announced last week by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging. Jason Kavulich, the state’s secretary of aging, said in a statement, “Pennsylvania’s senior community centers are cornerstones in our communities and pillars of daily life for the older adults they serve. … The projects funded by both the competitive and non-competitive grants will help the recipients enhance the programs and services already in place as well as create new opportunities to welcome current visitors and attract new consumers.”
The grant funding is appropriated by the General Assembly through proceeds from the Pennsylvania Lottery.
