Locust Avenue repair work to begin ‘soon’
Landslide closed portion of South Strabane road
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation confirmed Tuesday that construction work to reopen Locust Avenue in South Strabane Township will start soon, without giving a specific date.
Locust Avenue between Hudak Hill Road and Interstate 79 has remained closed since mid-March when the roadway was damaged by a landslide following a severe storm.
According to PennDOT District 12 Safety Press Officer Emily Stambaugh, “The district’s request for emergency funds was approved last week and we anticipate work to begin soon. The repair will include slope stabilization and drainage upgrades in the area. The department anticipates the repair to be completed this construction season.”
Stambaugh did not give a specific date for when construction will begin, nor when the road will reopen to vehicle traffic.
PennDOT previously told the newspaper in late March that this section of Locust Avenue could remain “closed for some time,” saying that department officials were investigating when they could reopen the roadway.
At the time, PennDOT suggested drivers detour to Country Club Road to South Country Club Road, exiting onto Pike Street near the I-79 interchange.
