Canonsburg unveils new mural
Residents and visitors have a new attraction to check out when visiting downtown Canonsburg.
Borough officials dedicated a show-stopping new mural on West Pike Street during a Saturday morning event, marking the culmination of over a year of effort.
The mural features 12 original paintings highlighting key local landmarks and a fresh tagline, “Canonsburg, You’ll Love It Here.” The 38-by-30-foot artwork adorns the eastern exterior wall of the Rusty Gold Brewing building in a tough vinyl-like material installed by Printscape.
According to Canonsburg Community Events Coordinator Linda Romano, the mural was funded by a $25,000 grant from the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency and contributions from local businesses.
The committee that planned the mural wanted to use its share of grant capital to showcase bright moments from the borough’s history.
Artists James Sulkowski and Mike Melone each completed six oil paintings of the subjects, which Melone arranged into the final image.
Melone said that seeing residents walking along West Pike Street stop and look at the mural is “worth its weight in gold.”
Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome applauded the mural committee, saying that they had “done an excellent job implementing this masterpiece.”
According to Borough Council President Eric Chandler, the “beautiful” mural faithfully represents local history and the ongoing efforts of its residents.
Romano said the mural committee’s vision has finally been brought to life, adding, “We are so happy to share that vision with the community.”
Starting in either late July or early August, the mural will feature a QR code link to a two-minute video highlighting a range of borough businesses to further energize the local economy.
