A West Virginia man who shot another man in Greene County in a dispute over a dirt bike and led West Virginia police on a car chase before his arrest will serve up to 18 months in jail.

Jonathan Trump, 25, of Maidsville, pleaded guilty in Greene County Court of Common Pleas Thursday to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. A charged of attempted homicide was dropped.

The plea preempted a one-day trial that had been scheduled for Tuesday.

Trump was given a sentence Monday of time served to 18 months. He had been in jail since June after shooting Justin McElroy, 25, of Carmichaels, in the leg.

Trump had gone to the Wayne Village apartment complex to discuss selling a dirt bike, according to his affidavit of probable cause, which he stipulated was accurate in his guilty plea.

Negotiations became heated and then violent, culminating in the shooting.

McElroy, who suffered a wound to the femoral artery in his right thigh, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.

Trump fled the scene and was arrested a week later.

Trump was released Monday to the custody of authorities in West Virginia, where he had been wanted for grand larceny and a parole violation.

His projected release date on the West Virginia charges is in June 2034, according to the West Virginia Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation website.
