Peters school board OKs preliminary budget with tax increase

By Brad Hundt 2 min read

The Peters Township School District Board of Directors has voted to approve a preliminary $89.7 million budget for the 2026-27 school year.

If the budget is given final approval by the board at its June 22 meeting, the millage rate for property owners in the school district will increase by .32 mills, from 16.28 mills to 16.60 mills. This means the owner of a home in the district will have to pay an additional $32 for every $100,000 of assessed property value.

The budget will be balanced and the district will maintain a $5 million reserve fund. Brad Rau, the district’s business manager, pointed out that the increase is necessary due to building maintenance projects and inflation.

“It’s just the cost of doing business, with inflation going up,” Rau explained Tuesday.

Atop the list of the district’s maintenance projects is the heating and cooling system at Bower Hill Elementary School in Venetia. The structure was built in 1999, and the HVAC system is due to be replaced, Rau said. He also noted that several neighboring districts have also raised their millage rates for the 2026-27 school year, including South Fayette, Upper St. Clair, Chartiers-Houston and Ringgold.

In other business at its May 18 meeting, the board approved hiring Michael Henaghan as the principal of Peters Township Middle School. Henaghan has been assistant principal at the middle school, and will be replacing Adam Sikorski, who will become the district’s assistant to the superintendent for curriculum and instruction July 1.
