Monessen woman pleads guilty to check-cashing scheme
A Monessen woman pleaded guilty in federal court last week in Pittsburgh to bank fraud for a nearly $1.9 million check-cashing scheme over more than a decade in North Strabane Township.
Emily Roberts, 55, pleaded guilty to the scheme while providing cleaning services at a home, where she repeatedly stole checks from the victim’s checkbook, wrote the checks out to cash and forged a signature on the checks before depositing the money into her own personal bank account.
Investigators said Roberts obtained $1.89 million through the deposit of 636 checks from January 2014 to March 2026.
U.S. District Judge W. Scott Hardy scheduled sentencing for Feb. 10. The FBI and North Strabane Township Police Department investigated the thefts.
