Canonsburg officials and business leaders met last week to review the past six years of economic growth and plan for the future.

The borough has seen a marked upswing in downtown business growth in recent years thanks to targeted redevelopment efforts, local business associations and a focus on diverse local events to drive customer traffic.

According to borough council President Eric Chandler, the Sept. 28 Moving Canonsburg Forward workshop was an intentional effort to “celebrate the wins” of recent years while “targeting opportunities ahead.”

Chandler said in a statement that workshop attendees represented a united vision for how to keep the borough moving forward.

Marquee projects like the Midtown Market redevelopment that opened in late 2025, the new Sarris Candies storefront and the upcoming Canon Theatre have been tentpoles in this ongoing effort.

The Downtown Canonsburg Merchants Association and Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce have also invested in expanding existing events and bringing new events to the borough, which has provided a steady stream of pedestrian visits and attention.

Canonsburg Borough Manager Jennifer Foster said the meeting was a great opportunity for borough officials to work with local business owners and “let them know that they are a vital part of the community that create jobs and help invest in our neighborhoods.”

Foster added that the municipality does its best to maintain open lines of communication and partnership with these groups.

“I think it was very good, I think we took the opportunity to realize that we may have different responsibilities, we share many of the same goals,” Foster said, “so I’m thinking of all the great things that are happening in our neighborhood.”
