Car crashes into Washington church’s sign, front steps
A car crashed into a Washington church this weekend, destroying a brick signboard and causing serious injuries to two people inside the vehicle.
Washington police responded to the crash at the Fairhill Manor Church on Montgomery Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday and found the vehicle resting on the church’s front steps after plowing through a brick monument signboard in the front lawn.
Two people were trapped inside the vehicle while another man who was in the car ran from the scene, police said.
Avery Alexander Ray, 23, of Washington, was found shortly after and allegedly fought with officers – injuring two of them – as they tried to take him into custody, police said. He is being held at the Washington County jail on a probation detainer, police said.
The two other people in the car had to be extricated from the vehicle, and both were flown by medical helicopters to Pittsburgh area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Their names and conditions were not immediately released.
City police said charges are pending, although it was not immediately clear who was driving the vehicle.
Shrubs and debris from the car and signboard were scattered across the church’s front lawn days after the crash, while yellow caution tape was wrapped around the front steps, which sustained damage in the collision.
