Suspect shot while state police serve arrest warrant at Washington home
A state police trooper shot and wounded a man Friday morning while serving an arrest warrant at a Washington home.
State police went to 18 Oak St. shortly before 6:30 a.m. to serve the warrant when the shooting occurred, Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh said.
Walsh said the man, whose age and identity were not released, was taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital where his condition was not immediately known.
State police were originally at the house investigating alleged computer crimes, and the department’s major case team is now investigating the shooting. The suspect who police were attempting to arrest was shot during the incident.
Numerous state troopers could be seen standing outside the house along an alley behind the Duncan Miller Glass Museum in the city as several people from the neighborhood gathered nearby expressing their displeasure about the shooting. Washington Mayor Jojo Burgess was seen standing with bystanders trying to calm tensions.
Burgess said the 24-year-old man, who is his relative, is deaf and was shot in his bedroom after waking up from sleeping when troopers entered the home. He said police have had “previous interactions” with the man before with no issues, so he is unsure what transpired this time that led to the shooting.
