The AMC movie theater at the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon will screen its last film Sunday night.

The six-screen movie theater at the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon is closing.

The last screenings at the theater will be Sunday night, according to its owner, AMC Theatres. In a statement, the company said that it “routinely reviews the theaters in our circuit and makes decisions on what will best strengthen the company going forward.”

AMC, the world’s largest movie theater chain, also operates a multiplex at South Hills Village, about two miles from the Galleria. The statement continued, “We thank our Mt. Lebanon 6 guests for their patronage, and encourage them to continue enjoying the AMC experience at AMC South Hills Village 10.”

A reason for shuttering the theater was not given. The closing of the theater comes a little more than a month after the Bravo! Italian Kitchen closed at the Galleria. Earlier this year, the Galleria was purchased by Washington, D.C.-based Roadside Development for $15 million.

The curtain coming down on the Galleria’s movie theater further limits moviegoing options for residents of the South Hills and the surrounding area. With the theater ending operations, it leaves the Phoenix Luxury 14 at the Chartiers Valley Shopping Center in Collier Township, the South Hills Village multiplex and the Row House Hollywood theater in Dormont. There are no movie theaters operating in Washington, Greene or Fayette counties.

In the years since the COVID-19 pandemic, AMC and other movie theater chains have been closing some locations in the face of sagging attendance and shifting movie-watching habits as a result of the rise of Netflix, Hulu and other streaming outlets. AMC also is shouldering a high debt load, in part due to loans it took on during the pandemic when theaters worldwide locked their doors for several months.
