A South Strabane Township man was rescued from a fire at his home Wednesday evening.

According to a release from the South Strabane Fire Department, the department was called to the 770 block of Michigan Avenue at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday after 911 dispatchers received reports of smoke coming from a split-level home.

The dispatcher received an updated report of a single resident trapped inside while first responders were en route, according to the release.

Firefighters were able to rescue the man, who was taken to a local hospital.

Washington Fire Chief Chris Richer said a hose crew and rescue crew working simultaneously were able to extinguish the fire and rescue the man from his upstairs bedroom within three to five minutes.

He was stable and recovering Thursday afternoon, Richer said.

No first responders sustained injuries during the rescue effort.

Richer described the fire as starting on the kitchen stove on the first floor, which spread to cover the room.

The damage was “moderate” overall, and mainly contained to smoke and structural damage within the kitchen, he said.

“It was a very good example of the collective effort of several local companies working together,” Richer said.

Also responding to the fire were firefighters from Washington, Canton and Chartiers townships; South Strabane Township Police Department and Ambulance & Chair EMS.
