As the 2000 Turkeys campaign rolls on, donations are even more important with the reported increase in the cost of turkeys this year.

With Thanksgiving just four weeks away, consulting firm PwC reported the price of turkeys has risen nearly 8% this year.

“So 8% is a lot of money that we weren’t counting on,” said Canonsburg Mayor Dave Rhome during Thursday’s on-air appeal for donations with members of the 2000 Turkeys board at WJPA Radio.

“So that’s where we’re at,” Mayor Rhome said, “We’re going to need your help … we’re at the end of October and we’re about halfway to our goal of being able to feed 22,000 people here in Washington County.”

To date, the campaign has raised $68,995 toward the goal of $150,000.

2000 Turkeys partners with the Greater Washington County Food Bank/Food Helpers and the City Mission’s Boxes of Love to make sure that Washington County residents struggling with food insecurity are able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with their families and loved ones.

There is still plenty of time to donate, either online through Zeffy (using the accompanying QR code), or by mailing donations to 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, Pa., 15301.

Letters and cards continue to roll in daily with donations, and in one case, the donation came in beautifully decorated jars. The Golubosky family of Washington, owners and operators of several local businesses, dropped off six Mason jars at WJPA filled with change collected since the 2000 Turkeys campaign last year.

Lewis Golubosky said his children and grandchildren, along with any visitors to his home, contribute their change to the jar that is always present on the kitchen counter throughout the year.

“We have five adult kids and then we have six grandchildren, and we’re just trying to teach them really the right thing to do,” Golubosky said.

The card from the family read, “We are grateful for all the hard work that goes into raising money for the community. Our contribution tradition has been to save our change and donate to this wonderful cause.”

Golubosky said the first jar is already on the counter to collect change for next year.
