Peters school board narrowly approves creation of ad hoc committee for extracurricular activities
Extracurricular activities will be examined by group
Peters Township’s school board narrowly approved the creation of an ad hoc committee for the 2026-27 academic year Monday that will look at the extracurricular activities the district is offering.
Members of the board said the committee’s focus would not be limited solely to sports, but its creation comes as district officials are considering upgrades to facilities that some of its student athletes use. That includes the stadium the football team uses located at Peters Township Middle School.
The board approved the creation of the committee after some debate, and after the board turned down a motion that would have tabled the committee’s creation until its focus could be narrowed.
“I just want to be given the go-do, and we’ll go do,” said board member Jason Camilletti, who will be leading the committee. “I’m excited to get this thing up and running.”
He added, “We need to figure out what projects we are proceeding with, and what we are not.”
Some board members wondered whether the issues the board is grappling with would be better dealt with through its building and grounds and finance committees. Alex O’Neill, who chairs the board, wondered, “Are we appropriately using our time and the administration’s time?”
However, the board decided to proceed with the committee on a 5-4 vote.
“We need to get data, analyze it and make recommendations,” said board member Michael Lynch.
In other business, the board approved hiring Civil & Environmental Consultants Inc. for $105,000 to provide professional engineering services for a proposed paving and storm sewer improvement project at Peters Township Middle School. For the same project, the board approved a pre-construction professional services agreement with SitelogIQ Construction Management at a cost not to exceed $30,000. Also approved was hiring Escajeda Masonry & Chimney at a cost of $15,540 to complete masonry work at McMurray Elementary School.
