Powerboat racing will return to the Albert Gallatin Regatta this year.

The Albert Gallatin Regatta is back – and organizers said it’s bigger and better.

The event will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Memorial Day weekend, May 25-26, at Point Marion Park on the shores of the Monongahela River.

For many years, the powerboats dominated the river for the regatta, which is in its 45th year. The event drew thousands, but eventually dwindled down to a couple of vendors, live music and fireworks.

“You can’t call it a regatta if there’s nothing on the water,” said Wendy Cottrell, a member of Riverfront Park Associates, the nonprofit organization that plans the regatta.

After a short hiatus, the powerboats made a limited return with six boats last year. However, this year Cottrell said powerboat racing in its purest form is back with over 50 boats expected to participate in the U.S. Title Series Powerboat Races, sponsored by Faith Assembly of God.

The U.S. Title Series was formed in 1982 and draws drivers from all across the country.

With the return of powerboat racing, Cottrell said they are expecting to draw 3,000 to 5,000 over the two days of this year’s regatta.

In addition to racing, Cottrell said there will be over 50 vendors, a full slate of live entertainment, and carnival rides and games. There will also be food trucks and also a concession stand.

A parade at 11 a.m. Saturday will kick off the regatta. Little Miss and Mr. Regatta, as well as the 2024 Albert Gallatin Regatta Queen will also be crowned that day.

The Albert Gallatin Regatta 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday evening, and starts at Point Marion Park near the confluence of the Cheat and Monongahela rivers. The course is an out and back on the new Sheepskin Trail.

A fireworks display at dusk on Sunday closes out the regatta.

“It’s such a busy weekend, but there’s something for everyone,” said Cottrell.
