Cecil Township Fire Department alerted the community Friday afternoon that residents may smell a gas-like odor.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, crews responded to two reports of the odor on Reissing Road but found no active gas leak or hazard to the public.

Washington County 911 told the department that a contractor in the McDonald area was transferring mercaptan, the odorant added to natural gas. The substance was released into the air when a hose failed.

According to the department, there is no danger to the public, but those in the Cecil Township and McDonald areas may smell a gas-like odor until the substance dissipates.
