South Strabane Township supervisors hired a new township manager this week.

Peter Stefansky, of Washington, will begin in the role on Jan. 5. Township officials had been looking to hire a new manager since the departure of Jeff Ziegler at the end of August. South Strabane Township Fire Department Chief Jordan Cramer served as the interim township manager.

The township’s board of supervisors voted unanimously at their meeting Tuesday evening to hire Stefansky.

South Strabane will pay Stefansky a salary of $95,000.

“Since I’ve gotten out of college, I have primarily worked in local government,” Stefansky said Thursday.

Stefansky, 50, earned a master’s degree in city/urban, community and regional planning from California University of Pennsylvania, now PennWest California, in 2000.

From 2009 to 2019, he served as the director of the Washington Business District Authority. He also served as the city’s Main Street manager.

Stefansky says that he did “take a little break from doing that stuff,” and is currently employed as a program specialist for Community Options, a nonprofit organization that assists individuals with developmental disabilities find employment opportunities.

“I try to stay involved and active in the community. Taking part in events, sitting on boards,” Stefansky said. “I kind of saw an opportunity to get involved and give back in the greater community in Washington.”

At the meeting at which Stefansky was hired, residents raised concerns about potential new developments in the township, such as an AI data center and solar farms.

Elected officials will likely be voting on ordinances regulating such developments early next year.

Stefansky says dealing with issues will likely be the biggest challenge for him as he steps into this new role.

“I think a lot of that stuff with zoning is going to be challenging,” Stefansky said. “Hopefully we can continue to grow, but do it in a way that’s best for the residents in the community at large in South Strabane.”

He added that he spoke with residents at that meeting and said, “I think there are a lot of people with good ideas,” and that he is looking forward to working with the community.

“I think there is a lot of opportunity for development. I really appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this process with them,” Stefansky said.
