Peters Township police charged a man Friday in connection with the theft of more than $3,000 from the Peters Township Library Foundation.

Deandre Curry, 33, of Chicago, Ill., faces felony charges of forgery, access, device fraud, theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception and identity theft.

According to the criminal complaint, an employee of the library foundation mailed a check to pay a business-related credit card bill. The check had been placed in the mailbox in the parking lot of the Peters Township Police Department on Sept. 24.

The foundation later learned the credit card company never received the payment, and that the check had been deposited to Curry’s PNC bank account on Oct. 8, court paperwork indicates.

According to the complaint, the check had been altered to show Curry as the payee and the amount as $3,105.18.

It is not clear how Curry came to be in possession of the check.

Police obtained a search warrant for Curry’s bank on Dec. 1 and confirmed that he had deposited a check from the library foundation. The funds were returned to the foundation on Oct. 14.

There is an active warrant for Curry’s arrest.
