A crash of I-79 in South Strabane Friday sent six people to the hospital.

Six people were taken to hospitals after a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon on Interstate 79 in South Strabane Township.

Jordan Cramer, South Strabane fire chief, said the accident occurred at about 2:20 p.m. near mile marker 39 on the interstate. One vehicle had five occupants described as being in their late teens and early 20s, while the other had just one.

Cramer said reports from bystanders indicated that one of the vehicles was traveling erratically. One of the vehicles rolled on its roof on the side of the road, while the other suffered severe damage.

Five of the people in the accident were taken to UPMC/Washington Hospital and one was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital.

“From what I know, I believe everyone has been released from the hospital,” Cramer said Saturday morning. “I don’t have any official reports on that but I saw that several people that know them state everyone had been released.”

According to the department’s Facebook page, the interstate was closed prior to Manifold Road as emergency personnel cleared the accident scene.

This call for the South Strabane firefighters came on the heels of a very busy month of June during which Cramer said the department responded to 198 calls.

“That’s a lot of calls for us,” he said.
