CNX Resources Corp., the Southpointe-based natural gas company, will receive $300,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for two mobile compressed natural gas fueling units for its fleet of vehicles.

The $300,000 grant to CNX is a portion of the $3.4 million the DEP has awarded businesses, utilities, municipalities, school districts and other entities through its Alternative Fuel Incentive Grant program. The program is designed to replace older gasoline or diesel fueled vehicles with cleaner options, including those that are electric-powered or run on natural gas.

DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley said in a news release that the program “aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality for many Pennsylvania communities with the use of electric school buses, Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) trucks, electric charging stations, and other clean transportation alternatives.”

Giant Eagle also received $300,000 for the purchase of 15 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tractor-trailers. Also in this region, the Duquesne Light Company is receiving $78,750 so it can buy 13 electric pickup trucks and one electric passenger vehicle.

The DEP estimates that its grants will save 1.2 million gallons of gasoline annually and help reduce Pennsylvania’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are committed to increasing sustainable and renewable energy and these grants will help local governments, businesses, school districts and nonprofit organizations invest in alternative fuel solutions that are reliable, efficient and often cheaper to operate,” Shirley said.
